Turner just happy to play
XAVIER NOTEBOOK
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
PITTSBURGH Aaron Turner could not wait to hear his name called Tuesday night. With 10:12 left in the first half, the sophomore forward entered Xavier's game at Dayton.
It was Turner's first appearance in more than a month. He had been suspended twice, and even after he was cleared to play remained on the bench for the Rhode Island game.
I just went and played and had fun, Turner said. It felt good to be back playing. I couldn't wait. I missed the Crosstown Shootout. I missed Princeton. That made me want it more.
Turner played 18 minutes against the Flyers and finished with 10 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and no turnovers.
He had five points, four rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes in Saturday night's 85-78 loss at Duquesne.
The return of Turner will mean fewer minutes for junior center Reggie Butler, who played just four minutes at Dayton and none at Duquesne.
It gives us a little more flexibility, especially against a team like Duquesne that's small and quick, coach Skip Prosser said. And our press will be more effective with him back in there.
Chart climbing
Darnell Williams scored 17 points eight in the final 1:33 and moved into 15th place on Xavier's all-time scoring list, passing Jamal Walker (1,333) by one point. Williams needs five points to pass Joe Viviano.
Notable numbers
Duquesne's bench outscored Xavier's 42-15.
Xavier guards Williams and Maurice McAfee scored the Musketeers' last 14 points; prior to the final 2:43, they had combined for 10 points.
XU missed 10 free throw attempts.
Up next
Xavier does not play again until a week from today, against La Salle at home (2 p.m.). The Musketeers' will put their 24-game winning streak at the Cincinnati Gardens on the line. The Explorers dropped to 6-8, 0-3 with a 75-66 loss Saturday to Rhode Island.
XU was scheduled to bus back to Cincinnati from Pittsburgh after the game Saturday night, then get two days off before returning to practice Tuesday.
