Dislocated finger hampers Price

XAVIER NOTEBOOK

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sophomore Lloyd Price looked pleadingly at athletic trainer David Fluker. With about 10 minutes left Saturday, Price began his campaign to get back in the game despite having dislocated his left ring finger in the opening minutes.

        With 7:34 remaining, he re-entered.

“I thought he was done,” coach Skip Prosser said.

Price, who had scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games, finished with zero points on 0-of-3 shooting in nine minutes.

“I really couldn't help them,” he said. “I couldn't hold the ball.”

Price went up to block a shot by GW's Chris Monroe, then landed in a heap with teammate Maurice McAfee and Monroe. Price left the game with 17:37 to go in the first half. He was treated on site. The finger was taped and had a splint.

“My bone ripped through my finger,” Price said. “I just landed bad. I'm all right, though. I'm cool.”

He said he'll be able to play Wednesday night at Canisius. Fluker said, “We'll see how it feels.”

Team issue
Junior center Reggie Butler started in place of sophomore Kevin Frey because of what Prosser said was “a team issue.” Asked if Frey would start in the next game, Prosser said it depends on practice.

Butler grabbed six first-half rebounds — one shy of his career high. But after picking up his third foul early in the second half, he went to the bench for the rest of the game.

Prosser said it was because the pace picked up, freshman David West was playing well and Frey gave them a better ballhandler.

“It's real hard,” Butler said. “I wish I would get a chance to go back out there, but that's life. Everything doesn't go your way. You can't sit around and cry about it.”

Hometown guy
Alvin Brown played high school basketball at Gonzaga in D.C. He had roughly two dozen fans at the game, including family and friends. Brown scored 13 points and set career-highs with nine rebounds and five assists.

“We lost,” he said. “All that doesn't really mean anything.”

Notable numbers
West recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

        • XU is 5-of-37 from 3-point range over the last two games.

        • Senior Darnell Williams is 5-of-26 from the field and 2-of-17 from 3-point range over the last two games.

Up next
Xavier plays its final non-conference game Wednesday night at Canisius (7 p.m., no TV).
