XAVIER NOTEBOOK

Xavier's Frey struck again by opponent

PHILADELPHIA — For the second time in 13 days, Xavier's Kevin Frey was blatantly hit the head by an opponent. Both times, the sophomore forward required seven stitches — once above his eye, Sunday on top of his head.

The latest blow came with 4:23 left in the first half of Sunday's game at LaSalle. Rasual Butler launched a shot for the Explorers, Frey went for the rebound and 6-foot-11, 275-pound Garrett Bragg hit him with his right elbow.

Frey grabbed his head with both hands and dropped to the floor. Blood was on his jersey and the court.

On Feb.15 against Duquesne, Frey was hit in the head by 6-10 Simon Ogunlesi.

“I have no idea what happened,” Frey said of Sunday's incident. “All I know is I was going to box him out.

“With Ogunlesi, we were playing physical the whole game. This, he just got in (the game). I couldn't believe it happened. But I felt it.”

After reviewing the play on video monitors, the officials declared it a flagrant technical and ejected Bragg, who went to check on Frey.

“No hard feelings,” Frey remembers Bragg saying.

LaSalle team doctor Seth Krum stitched up Frey, who returned for the second half.

Reaction
LaSalle coach Speedy Morris said of Bragg's foul: “If he did it and it's flagrant — which the referees all agree that it was — we don't promote that (and) he should be suspended.”

XU freshman David West started walking toward the LaSalle bench while Frey lay on the court bleeding.

“He walked away like he didn't do anything,” West said of Bragg. “I just think it was a lack of respect for Kev.”

Point man
XU point guard Maurice McAfee was 0-of-6 from the field with no assists at halftime — but had six rebounds.

He scored eight of his 10 points in the final 6:19 after sitting out roughly four minutes with four personal fouls. McAfee finished with a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and two turnovers.

Notable numbers
XU sophomore Lloyd Price tied his career high with 11 rebounds. ... LaSalle senior Donnie Carr, who finished with 20 points Sunday, has 2,007 for his career, fifth in school history. ... The crowd of 2,723 at Tom Gola Arena was the second-smallest XU has played in front of this season after Canisius (2,331). Up next
Xavier plays at St. Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Channel 64).
