Price takes seat and stays there

Xavier Notebook

BY MICHAEL PERRY

Sophomore Lloyd Price, Xavier's No.3 scorer (13.1 ppg) who started 30 of the first 31 games, did not play against Marquette on Wednesday night. He said afterward that the benching was his own doing because he missed practices Sunday and Monday.

“Yea, I think it's fair,” he said. “You've got to follow the rules. (Coach Skip Prosser) didn't set me down, I sat myself down. It's something I did. It's just one of those things that you learn from.”

The 6-foot-5 forward did not return with the Musketeers from Philadelphia last Friday, the day after they lost in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. He went home to Wilmington, Del., and got back to Cincinnati on Monday evening.

He practiced Tuesday but did not work with the starters. Price was in uniform Wednesday night but remained on the sideline with his warmup top on.

Sophomore Alvin Brown started at shooting guard, and senior Darnell Williams moved to small forward.

“Coaches never suspend players; players suspend players,” Prosser said.

Will Price play Monday night? “We'll see how practice goes,” Prosser said.

Money machine
Ever wonder if NIT teams make money by participating in the second-tier postseason event?

Last year, Xavier profitted by about $20,000 because it advanced to the semifinals in New York, Athletic Director Mike Bobinski said. Each participant gets a share of the tournament's revenue based on how many games it plays. Because the Musketeers played five games — the maximum number possible — they received a check from the NIT for roughly $75,000, Bobinski said.

That helped offset the substantial expense of having stayed in New York City while competing in the semifinals and third-place game.

Clamping down
Xavier did a nice job on Marquette's leading scorer Brian Wardle. The junior forward came in averaging 17.1 ppg but finished with only four points on 2-of-11 shooting. He missed all six of his 3-point tries.
