XAVIER NOTEBOOK
Williams questionable for Notre Dame
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Senior Darnell Williams did not practice for the second straight day, and Xavier coach Skip Prosser said Saturday that he didn't know whether Williams would be ready to play Monday night at Notre Dame in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
Williams, who averages 13.1 ppg, sprained his right knee late in the St. Bonaventure loss March 9 in the Atlantic 10 tournament. He played but struggled against Marquette last Wednesday night, going 1-of-13 from the field with just three points. He said afterward he was sore.
I'd say he's doubtful, Prosser said. We'll see how he does (Sunday).
Sophomore Lloyd Price has practiced with the starting unit. Prosser said that Price, benched for the Marquette game for missing two practices, would play against the Fighting Irish but he didn't know if Price would start.
WHAT'S NEXT: The winner of Monday night's game will face the winner of Southern Illinois and Brigham Young. Those teams play Tuesday night.
RENEW RIVALRY? Prosser interviewed last March for the Notre Dame coaching job, which went to former Kansas assistant Matt Doherty, a friend of Prosser since both were assistant coaches (Doherty at Davidson, Prosser at Xavier).
But Prosser said it is not strange to be facing the Fight ing Irish.
I'm not playing, he said. It's a game that we would like to play every year, but not every year up there. I think it makes sense, like Marquette. Philosophically, geographically.
The teams haven't met since Dec. 23, 1995 (ND won 72-70 at the Gardens). Xavier would like to renew the series.
