Xavier hires women's assistant

Three players sign; two transfer out

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier women's basketball coach Melanie Balcomb has hired Vicky Picott as her new top assistant to replace Tricia Cullop, the new head coach at Evansville.

Picott, who broke Balcomb's career scoring re cord at Hightstown (N.J.) High School, has been an assistant at Temple the past five years. She became available when Kristen Foley resigned and was replaced by Dawn Staley as Temple's head coach.

Picott was a two-time first-team all-Atlantic 10 Conference player at Rutgers, where she is No.3 all-time in scoring, rebounding and steals. She played overseas after college and recently had tryouts with WNBA teams in Miami and Detroit. Balcomb coached Picott in a summer league before she entered ninth grade.

        XU signed three this spring:

        • Colleen Yukes, a 6-4 center from Edmonton, Canada.

        • Aida Sarajlija, a 6-1 forward from Bosnia.

        • Shavon Bell, a 5-8 guard from Euclid, Ohio, who played last season at Cincinnati State.

Yukes is a big center who will help when seniors Taru Tuukkanen and Jennifer Phillips graduate. Sarajlija is more athletic, like former Musketeer Kim Hotz. Bell is quick and strong and can slash to the basket.

They join fall signees Kate Kreager, Allison Lipinski and Charlyn Hawkins.

Two Musketeers have left the program and are transferring, Balcomb confirmed. Hilary Kulik will attend Division II Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, and Elina Pasola will attend Catawba College, a Division II school in Salisbury, N.C.
