XU recruit MVP in all-star game

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier basketball recruit Romain Sato was named player of the game after leading Ohio to a 92-88 victory over Michigan in the Wendy's Classic Thursday night at the Nutter Center in Fairborn, Ohio. Sato, from Dayton Christian High School, scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting and had nine rebounds.

Andy Larkin (St. Xavier High/Rochester) was 1-of-6 from the field and had four points and five rebounds for Ohio.

Miami recruit Eugene Seals, from Saginaw, Mich., led Michigan with 23 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks and matched up with Sato for what could be the first of many showdowns between the two.

“I'll give him a good battle,” Seals said. “I never heard of him until today. When he blocked Rickey Paulding's dunk, that's when I started to look at him. I told him I didn't think he had springs like that.”

Said Sato: “I look forward to playing against him (in college). He's very good. He's a nice guy on the floor.”

Seals' future coach Charlie Coles of Miami was in the stands.

“What he's going to get from me is a lot of hard work and dedication,” Seals said. “I'll never quit. I hate to lose.”

Ohio plays tonight in the championship game against Indiana, which defeated Illinois 96-87. Illinois and Michigan play at 6 p.m., followed by the title game. Tickets are $5.
