There are 10 members of the U.S. Olympic Shooting Team. Two have ties to Xavier.

Jason Parker, a 1996 XU graduate, will compete Sept.17 in the men's air rifle competition.

Thrine Kane, a Xavier sophomore, will compete Sept.19 in the women's 50-meter, 3-position rifle event.

“Shooting is a sport where you can have your best match ever and still come in in the middle of the pack,” Kane said. “It all just depends on who has a good day that certain day.”

How did two people reach the Olympics from the Xavier rifle program? Here are a few things you may not know:

        • Last year's XU rifle team was the NCAA runner-up, the highest finish ever for any Musketeers athletic program.

        • XU's shooting range, on the second floor of the Armory building, next to Schmidt Fieldhouse, has 16 stations, more than any indoor collegiate shooting range in the country.

        • Each November, Xavier plays host to the Walsh Invitational, the largest indoor rifle meet in the nation.

The success of last year's Xavier team, coupled with the two Olympians, has already helped the team's recruiting.

“The best prospects right now are on our porch,” coach Alan Joseph said.
