Xavier, Dayton battle for Alter star

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

If Adam Waleskowski wants a sibling rivalry, all he has to do is play basketball for Xavier.

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Kettering Alter forward teamed with brother Keith to win the 1999 Ohio Division II state title. But with Keith now a redshirt freshman at Dayton, Adam picking XU over the Flyers would mean battling his brother.

“It will be a factor in my decision,” Adam said. “But that's only two or three games out of the year, so it's not too big a factor.”

Adam Waleskowski, who led the Greater Catholic League in rebounding (13.0 avg.) last year and averaged 12.7 points, is rated the seventh-best player in Ohio by MidwestHoops.com.

Dayton and XU have recruited him hardest, but he said he's also considering Purdue, Penn State and Florida State.

“I think it's between Xavier and Dayton,” Alter coach Joe Petrocelli said.

Petrocelli, a Xavier grad, would love to have his first Xavier signee since 1974. But folks in Dayton, still stinging about Dayton Christian's Romain Sato picking XU last year, are pressuring Waleskowski to stay home.

Petrocelli said Waleskowski, who could end up Alter's all-time leading rebounder, prefers an up-tempo style.

XU, with three seniors, already has gotten three commitments. It could offer Waleskowski a scholarship only if a current Musketeer elects not to return next year.

“My dad told (XU coach Skip Prosser) if he thought XU was a place I want to go, he'll pay the first year,” Waleskowski said. “So I'm trying not to have that be a factor (in the decision).”

Waleskowski said he'll decide in the next five weeks. He plans to attend XU's Midnight Madness as part of his official visit Oct.13-14.
