Sato looks strong in intrasquad scrimmage
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Coach Skip Prosser has talked of bringing freshman Romain Sato along slowly he played just one year of high school basketball. But the swingman may not have to wait long before making the starting lineup.
Sato was the leading scorer of the 12-minute intrasquad scrimmage Friday night, throwing in 10 of the blue team's 17 points. He showed he is aggressive and quick, and that his 40-inch vertical leap wasn't exaggerated.
I still have to learn to play (at this level), Sato said. I'm a freshman, but if I have a chance to play, I can play hard.
Junior forward Kevin Frey scored nine points and senior guard Maurice McAfee had eight, and they led the white team to a 30-17 victory.
Junior shooting guard Alvin Brown turned an ankle early in the scrimmage. He was treated afterward, and Prosser said he is day-to-day. Brown sat out Saturday's practice.
WILLIAMS WAITS: Darnell Williams has remained in Cincinnati and worked out with his former XU teammates while his New York-based agent, Erik Rudolph, explores professional options for him.
Williams was picked by the Cincinnati Stuff in the International Basketball League draft and said he'll play here if nothing shows up overseas. The Stuff open training camp Nov.2.
Williams said former XU teammate Lenny Brown had good things to say about the Stuff, which Brown played for last year. Brown now is playing in Belgium.
Williams played for Sacramento's team in the NBA's Rocky Mountain Review summer league in Salt Lake City.
I did pretty well, he said. (The Kings) invited me back for next year.
ALUMNI STARS: The 1980s vs. '90s alumni game was close, thanks to Williams being reassigned to the '80s team. That evened things out, and the '90s team won 49-48 when the '80s team couldn't get off a final shot.
Jamie Gladden ('93 grad) led all scorers with 11 points, and Williams, Byron Larkin ('88) and Harris each scored nine.
