Xavier junior forward Khalil Nixon has left the team, though coach Skip Prosser has not ruled out his possible return.
Right now, he's not with the team, but that's all we can say, Prosser said.
Nixon, who had fallen down the depth chart since preseason practice, had a talk with Prosser last Friday. He didn't join the team on its weekend trip to Toledo.
He told me (Friday) he was really struggling and needed some time to think about things, Prosser said. That's the last time I've heard from him.
The Musketeers returned from Christmas break Wednesday, but Nixon failed to appear for practice.
The 6-foot-5 Nixon played in five games, totaling six points (1.2 avg.) and eight rebounds (1.6) in 21 minutes. But after playing five minutes Dec. 2 at Wisconsin, he has totaled just three min utes in five games.
Nixon, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is a junior-college transfer from the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. He averaged 16 points and 9.8 rebounds during the regular season last year, and 22 points and 15 rebounds in six California JUCO playoff games.
XU coaches had been high on Nixon's defense and athleticism, envisioning him playing at the top of the full-court press to guard the inbounds passer. But Nixon struggled mightily in preseason learning XU's schemes and fell behind teammates who already knew the system.
TV NOTE: XU's game Saturday against Kent will be carried locally on Ch. 25 (WBQC), which is not on the Warner Cable system. Channel 64 (WSTR) had hoped to carry the game but was not offered it by ESPN Plus, which is producing the telecast.
