Xavier Notebook
Decision on recruit on hold
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A decision on whether to rescind the scholarship of Xavier signee Jaison Williams might not come for a couple of weeks, athletic director Mike Bobinski said.
Williams' future is in doubt after his dismissal 12 days ago from Aurora (Colo.) Hinkley's team.
We need time to evaluate the circumstances thoroughly, Bobinski said. There are some circumstances that need to sort themselves out locally (in Colorado).
Williams' family and Hinkley officials, including coach Dan Jarvis, had a 35-minute meeting Thursday. Williams' mother, Marilyn, said the claims Jarvis gave for Williams' dismissal have not been substantiated.
We're still stunned, but we're tired of quibbling about this, she said. Just make a decision about whether he can come back or not. Jaison can't just stay in limbo over this thing.
Williams, a 6-foot-3 guard rated No.95 nationally by Hoop Scoop, averaged 18 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in Hinkley's first six games this season.
SIGNEE UPDATE: XU's other two signees are both succeeding despite extra defensive attention:
Keith Jackson, a 6-foot-5 forward from Purcell Marian, is averaging 17.5 points and 7.2 rebounds for the 7-4 Cavaliers. He is shooting 45 percent from the floor.
We only have two scorers Tony Fulks (13.0 ppg) is the other so Keith has had to force some things, coach Mike Gergen said. He's playing everything for me. He's all over the court.
What I feel best about is, he has kept his cool and learned from it. It will benefit him down the line.
Will Caudle, a 6-9, 220-pound forward from Indianapolis Warren Central, is averaging 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks for an 8-2 team. Caudle, rated 95th by Rivals100Hoops.com, is shooting 68 percent from the field.
Warren Central's other post player, 6-5 Aaron Patterson (12 ppg), has been lost for the season to academics, so in the past three games Caudle has been double- and triple-teamed. Despite that, he was 9-of-9 for 19 points and 13 rebounds last week in an 84-66 loss to Pike, the state's No.1 4A team.
He doesn't try to force things out of this game, coach Scott Heady said. I think he's going to continue to get better offensively.
Eleven days ago, a Caudle dunk shattered the backboard in a home game against Decatur Central. After being treated for cuts on his arms and legs, he returned to the game, which was moved to an auxiliary gym.
UP NEXT: Xavier visits George Washington (7-9, 1-2 Atlantic 10) at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
