XU brings search back home
Bobinski weighs which candidate to invite for visit
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Here is where the Xavier men's basketball coaching search stands: Athletic director Mike Bobinski has finished his off-campus interviews. Now he's deciding which candidate to bring to campus. That person will be the leading candidate to replace Skip Prosser.
Various sources have confirmed there have been in-person meetings with Butler coach Thad Matta and UNC Greensboro's Fran McCaffery believed to be the front-runners from the beginning and Kansas assistant Neil Dougherty.
Bobinski has spoken with other coaches, as well.
Bobinski met with Xavier officials Tuesday to talk about his findings.
It is expected that a candidate will be on Xavier's campus this week. A coach could be hired by week's end.
Dougherty confirmed to the Enquirer on Tuesday that he has met in person with Bobinski, and said: I do have a very strong interest. I think that job could be very special. I would love to be the next coach there.
Matta did not return phone calls. McCaffery, who already has confirmed meeting with Bobinski, interviewed at George Washington on Tuesday.
Butler athletic director John Parry is clearly unhappy that Matta, after one season as head coach, is considering a move.
I'm having a hard time understanding why it's a good fit for Xavier, Parry told The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday. I believe Thad has a better opportunity to have success here.
