Hayes commits to Xavier again

Juco forward had second thoughts when Prosser left

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier has re-secured the commitment of junior college forward Mike Hayes and hopes to complete its recruiting class with Indianapolis prep star Vytas Danelius, who plans to make his official visit today.

Hayes, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward from Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan., told XU coaches this weekend he will sign a national letter-of-intent with the Musketeers. He originally committed to them on April 17, re-opened his recruitment after coach Skip Prosser left, and returns to XU after considering Connecticut and Illinois.

“It's the best place for me,” Hayes said Sunday. “I like the school — it's small; I can get a lot done there. I'm also (going to be) playing beside David West; I'm looking to learn a lot from him.”

The Hartford, Conn., native averaged 13.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists this season, shooting 59.8 percent.

Russ Blake of JucoJunction.com has described Hayes as a “rebounder deluxe.”

“Don't expect him to come in there and be an impact player offensively,” Blake said. “What he will give them is a consistent rebounding effort, and he's pretty fast from baseline to baseline, so he fits in with their system nicely.”

Danelius, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound small forward from Indianapolis Park Tudor, is choosing among XU, Wake Forest, Notre Dame and South Carolina. The native of Lithuania has visited the other three schools. Danelius averaged 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks this season, shooting 70.2 percent.

When Hayes signs, XU will have one scholarship remaining.
