Xavier golfers tie for 20th in NCAA Regional

        WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Xavier tied for 20th with Louisiana State and Seton Hall at the East Region tournament in its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The top 10 teams in each regional advance to the NCAA Division Championships later this month.

        Sophomore Matt Makinson shot a team-best 1-under 71 in the final round Saturday and tied senior co-captain Jeff Marr (74) with a team-best 6-over 222 for the 54 holes. Senior co-captain Tim Donovan (St. Xavier) shot 1-over 73 in the final round for a 224 total. Sophomores Tim Smith and Bryon Harger had three-day totals of 230 and 236.

        As a team, the Musketeers shot 6-over 294 Saturday for a three-day total of 26-over 890.

        OTHER LOCALS: Miami RedHawks senior Lee Curry shot 3-over 75 Saturday for a 3-over 219 total and finished in a 16th-place tie in the Central Region standings at Stillwater, Okla. Last year, Curry finished 74th. Kent State, Oklahoma and Purdue shared first place to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

        Houston, with Turpin grad Andy Sanders, also qualified.

        Ohio State, with Kevin Hall (St. Rita School for the Deaf and Winton Woods) did not qualify for the finals.
