Tuukkanen wins scholar-athlete honor
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Xavier women's basketball player Taru Tuukkanen has been named Atlantic 10 Conference female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A two-time first-team A-10 honoree, Tuukkanen ended her college career
as part of XU's most successful team. The center from Helsinki, Finland, helped lead the Musketeers to a 31-3 record and a trip to the regional final of the NCAA Tournament last season. She earned a spot on the all-Mideast Region team.
For the season, Tuukkanen averaged 19.1 points and 8.4 rebounds, marking the third season in a row she led the Musketeers in scoring and rebounding. She was also the only player in the A-10 to rank among the league's top five in both categories. She set Xavier single-season records for points (648), field goals (259) and rebounds (287).
She was honorable mention All-America. She graduated as the school's all-time leader with 193 blocks, was second in scoring with 1,785 points and third in career rebounding with 857. Tuukkanen had a 3.56 GPA and was named to the Verizon Academic All-America team.
She was picked in the fourth round (57th overall) by the New York Liberty in the WNBA draft.
