Balcomb gets new deal from XU

Women's coach gets raise, extension through 2007-08

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier rewarded women's basketball coach Melanie Balcomb on Thursday with her third raise in 18 months.

“We basically renegotiated her entire contract,” athletic director Mike Bobinski said. “It's really a whole new agreement.”

After the Musketeers reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in March, Bobinski extended Balcomb's deal through the 2006-07 season. The new deal extends only through the '07-08 season, but Bobinski indicated the undisclosed raise was significant.

“This is an expression of how pleased we are of how far her staff and players have taken this program,” he said. “We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to her.”
