Caudle ineligible for freshman season
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Freshman forward Will Caudle has been declared a partial qualifier by the NCAA, making him ineligible for this season, pending an appeal by the school.
The men's team would field just nine scholarship players this season if the appeal fails.
He is so hurt, said his mother, Darlene Wellington. This is his dream, and it's put on hold. It's just not fair.
The NCAA wrote Wellington in June and said her son, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound graduate of Indianapolis Warren Central, was a half-credit short in English requirements. Caudle's freshman year was at Indianapolis Roncalli, and a course there that his family believed to be a Level II English course was actually Level I, a remedial level.
Wellington said Warren Central academic counselor Dave Shelbourne checked his transcripts numerous times and didn't see that discrepancy.
He started (classes) at Xavier this summer and took two English classes and made a B in one and a C+ in the other, she said. Now if that doesn't show he can do the work ...
Caudle's loss could be critical, leaving freshman Anthony Coleman as the only scholarship player to back up starting post players David West and Kevin Frey.
