XU women lose to Wis.-Green Bay

ORONO, Maine — The Xavier women's basketball team lost for the first time this season, 64-51 to Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opening game of the University of Maine's Dead River Company Classic.

For the Musketeers (2-1), it marks their first Thanksgiving weekend tournament defeat in three years. Last season, Xavier won Loyola Marymount's La Furama Holiday Classic, and in 1999, XU won Florida State's Tallahassee Democrat Seminole Classic. It also snaps Xavier's two-game winning streak over the Phoenix (2-0).

Xavier took a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, but UWGB responded with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 16-9 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Musketeers, who committed 18 first-half turnovers, trail the Phoenix 27-22 at halftime.

The Phoenix scored the first six points of the second half to take a 33-22 lead.

Xavier cut the margin to five, 49-44 with 6:45 remaining, but UWGB responded with an 11-2 run to put away the game.

Reetta Piipari led Xavier with 13 points. Amy Waugh added 11 and Kate Kreager scored 10 points and had a team-high eight rebounds.

Mandy Stowe scored 14 point to lead four UWGB scorers in double figures.

XU shot 40.4 percent from the field, including an 8-of-21 effort from 3-point range.

The 51 points is Xavier's lowest output since losing 49-44 to Massachusetts in the 1998 Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The Musketeers will face the host Black Bears, who lost 84-56 to Bradley Friday, at 4:30 p.m. today.

        UW-GB — Leonhard 5-12 0-0 10, Boyer 5-10 0-0 11, Dudley 3-5 5-5 11, Loiselle 3-8 2-2 9, Stowe 7-14 0-0 14, Grassell 0-1 0-0 0, Johnson 4-8 1-3 9. Totals 27-58 8-10 64.

        Xavier — Waugh 4-15 0-0 11, Piipari 5-11 0-1 13, Kreager 3-7 4-6 10, Bell 3-4 1-2 8, Sarajlija 0-3 0-0 0, Cuncic 1-2 0-0 2, Henderson 3-5 0-0 7. Totals 19-47 5-9 51.

        Halftime: WGB 27, XU 22. 3-point goals: WGB 2 (Boyer 1, Loiselle 1), XU 8 (Waugh 3, Piipari 3, Bell 1, Henderson 1).
