Five Questions with Kevin McGuff

Xavier's new women's basketball coach, Kevin McGuff, takes over the reins after spending 10 years as an assistant at the high school and college levels. His latest stint was as an assistant at Notre Dame, where he helped the women's basketball team to the 2001 NCAA Championship.

McGuff took time out to answer five questions from Enquirer sports reporter Ryan Ernst.

1. You're from Hamilton. Do you consider the move to Xavier as a homecoming?

Absolutely. It's really been a lot of fun. Although, I'm so close to Hamilton, but now I'm so busy, it's tough to get home. But I'm very comfortable here, work-wise and personally. Cincinnati is a great city to live in. When I was younger, most of my time was spent in Hamilton, but we would come down for different sporting events, and I always enjoyed that. It's a great sports town, and now I get to be involved in that.

2. After being an assistant for so long, do you get a kick out of being the boss?

Yeah, it's been fun and interesting. Everything that happens and all the decisions that have to do with the program rest at my feet. But I like that. I have a great staff, and they've helped me a lot with the transition.

3. Are you a screamer on the sidelines? Do you consider yourself a Roy Williams type or a Bob Huggins type?

Probably somewhere in between. I'm definitely into the game. I still have to maintain my composure to make decisions for us to be successful. I want to set the tone with intensity but still maintain some sanity to make the right decisions.

4. A lot of coaches have trademarks. Jerry Tarkanian chewed on a towel; Bobby Knight always wore a red sweater; the coach from Hoosiers liked to carry that checkbook-looking thing. Do you have something like that?

Not yet really. I don't think I've been coaching long enough to have one. But there's one thing you'll have to watch out for. I'll keep my coat on, but if it gets a little crazy, it will come flying right off.

5. You played at Badin and St. Joseph's in Indiana; and you've coached at Badin High, Notre Dame and now Xavier. What's up with you and Catholic schools?

I don't know. It's amazing, really. I went to Catholic grade school, high school, college. And now I've coached at two of the most prominent Catholic colleges in the country. Maybe that'll kind of be my niche in the coaching community.
