XU's Waugh wins contest

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier senior guard Amy Waugh closed her college career in the national spotlight Thursday, winning ESPN's College Slam Dunk and Three Point Championships in New Orleans.

Waugh, who put up the women's 3-point competition's highest single-round score of 24 in the semifinals, beat Vanderbilt's Ashley McElhiney 19-14 in the finals.

Xavier's single-season 3-point record holder then defeated men's winner Darnell Archey 17-15. She said the competition, open to players whose teams have been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, was bittersweet.

"I think it's a great way to go out," Waugh said. "It would have been better to advance further in the tournament as a team, but it helps get Xavier some national recognition, and that's great."

The competition will air again on ESPN at 3 p.m. Saturday.
