INDIANAPOLIS - If it hadn't been such a game-changing call, it might have gone unnoticed.
But when official Donnie Gray called Dedrick Finn for his fifth foul with 35 seconds left in overtime as Bracey Wright converted a layup, it became the play of the game. Wright's free throw gave Indiana a 78-77 lead, and the Hoosiers went on to defeat Xavier Saturday 80-77.
After the game, there was plenty of discussion about the call, particularly because replays showed that Finn did not touch Wright.
"I told (Finn) I didn't think he touched me at all," Wright said. "I guess they gave it to me because I was aggressive going to the basket. ... I went over and told him, 'That was one of the most suspicious calls that I've seen in college basketball.' I'm glad it went my way."
Indiana coach Mike Davis was happy the call went the Hoosiers' way, but he still apologized to Xavier coach Thad Matta afterward. Matta had his own thoughts concerning the ferocity of Finn's foul.
"Is Wright OK?" Matta asked in jest during a postgame press conference. "Is Bracey Wright OK? I hope he's all right."
Finn's foul not only gave Wright a chance to put Indiana ahead, it also removed another Xavier 3-point threat from the game.
Romain Sato already had fouled out in regulation when Gray whistled him for fouling Wright on a 3-point attempt, another call that raised some Xavier eyebrows.
CHALMERS REACHES MILESTONE: Lionel Chalmers scored only eight points Saturday, but it was enough to move him into the 1,000-point class. He scored his 1,001st point on an 11-foot jumper with 3:44 left in overtime.
MYLES MISSING: Anthony Myles played just two minutes in the second half after suffering a cut near his eye in the first half.
