Boothe, freshmen lead XU to victory

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Sophomore Tara Boothe scored 21 points to lead the Xavier women's basketball team to a 72-65 win over Lipscomb on Thursday night at Cintas Center.

Boothe hit six of her 11 field-goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also went 7 for 8 from the foul line.

Xavier freshmen Suntana Granderson and Miranda Green also stood out in the contest.

In the first four minutes of her first career start, Granderson had 10 points, two rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. She ended with a career-high 13 points.

Green tallied 10 points while recording a career-best nine assists. She also had three steals and a pair of rebounds.

Sophomore Kristy Wallner had an excellent all-around game, scoring five points while pulling down nine rebounds, dishing out six assists and getting three steals.

The teams were tied at 5 when Xavier used a 12-2 run to go up 17-7 in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the game.

The Musketeers built that lead and held a 42-25 advantage at halftime.

Lipscomb worked back into the game, and with 10 minutes left, the Lady Bison were within six at 58-52.

A 6-0 Xavier run got Xavier's lead back to double digits, but Lipscomb was not about to go away. XU struggled offensively down the stretch, hitting just one field goal in the final 8:10 of the game.

The Musketeers were able seal the game at the foul line. Lipscomb was within five, at 67-62, with 30 seconds remaining, but Xavier hit six free throws - four from Boothe and a pair from Green - to hold off the Lady Bison.

XU moves to 6-2 while Lipscomb falls to 2-3. The Musketeers head to Ann Arbor Sunday to play Michigan at 2 p.m.
