Sean Miller felt hungry, and suddenly he knew why - he hadn't eaten all day.
"It was just a whirlwind, in a good way," said Miller, who was hired Thursday as Xavier's new basketball coach. "It was 6 o'clock and I realized I had legitimately forgotten to eat. I just said, 'Wow.' But I wouldn't have it any other way."
The excitement level for Miller was still high Friday afternoon, 24 hours after he received his first head coaching position at age 35. He was in Indianapolis watching high school players as permitted during the July evaluation period. Senior B.J. Raymond, who has orally committed to Xavier, was playing in Indianapolis. Today, Miller is expected to fly to New Jersey for another summer camp.
His busy schedule won't stop, because he still plans to meet with the families of each of the current players and assemble his staff. Graduate assistant Mario Mercurio is staying, and Miller's brother, Western Kentucky assistant Archie Miller, is a likely candidate to join the staff.
Former Xavier assistants John Groce, Alan Major, Brandon Miller and Bill Comar were in Columbus Friday for Thad Matta's introductory news conference at Ohio State. Groce and Major are following Matta, and Matta said he is trying to work out details so Brandon Miller and Comar can remain with him.
Sean Miller has heard from dozens of coaches interested in joining the Xavier staff, he said.
"Every four hours, there's more names that come my way," Miller said. "If you ever want to know how special Xavier is, I can give you a list of people that want to come here."
Miller took a congratulatory call from Wake Forest coach and former XU coach Skip Prosser Thursday.
"He told me Xavier is a very special place," Miller said. "I know it means a lot to him."
